As part of the Safety Program the Youth Outreach Workers (YOW) provide a safe and positive presence in the neighbourhood by connecting with children and youth at after school programs. They build relationships with the children, youth, the parents, and community members.

The Youth Outreach provide

  • Relief staff for Walking School Bus
  • An open and listening ear
  • Resources on issues facing today’s children and youth

The Youth Outreach Workers also

  • Intervene and resolve youth/children issues
  • Conduct safety audits throughout North Point Douglas
  • Partner with various organizations
  • Attend network meetings

This summer the YOWs were involved in different activities such as

  • Bike Rodeo
  • The Butterfly Gala
  • Austin Street Festival
  • Youth Employment Program

Soroptimist International of Winnipeg is proud to be partnering with North Point Douglas Women’s Centre to offer programs of “Empowerment Training for Women & Girls.”  This has been made possible by a $5000 grant from Soroptimist International of the Americas and the Winnipeg Soroptimists.  The empowerment programs will include  workshops offered by staff in parenting, virtues development, non-violent conflict resolution and workshops offered by Soroptimist club members to  develop girls’ positive self-esteem and teen dating violence prevention.

Our YOWs partner with a variety of community organizations including Norquay School, Norquay Community Center, Boys and Girls Club, Graffiti Art Gallery,  Winnipeg Police Service and the City of Winnipeg.  Their summer activities include the Youth Employment Project, Community Gardening, Bike Rodeo, and the Austin Street Festival.

Over the last year the YOWs have had  5529 contacts with youth, 2461 with parents,  have done 153 safe walks, 732 park surveillances, and intervened with  21 high risk incidents - 7 of which were in regards to bullying.
